Commitment to Safeguarding
Commitment to Safeguarding
MidKent College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and to providing a safe environment for all our students. We expect all staff to share this commitment and to uphold their safeguarding responsibilities.
Our recruitment and selection processes are designed to support safer recruitment and ensure that appropriate checks are completed before an individual is appointed. As part of the application process, candidates are expected to demonstrate their understanding of, and commitment to, safeguarding and the College’s safeguarding requirements.
The successful candidate will be subject to the pre-employment checks appropriate to the role. These may include an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and, where the duties of the role meet the relevant criteria, a check of the Children’s Barred List. The level of DBS check will be determined by the duties and eligibility of the post.
Where applicable, we will also undertake other checks required for the role, including verification of identity, right to work in the UK, employment history and references, and any other checks required by law or statutory guidance. Where relevant, additional checks will be undertaken for candidates who have lived or worked outside the UK.
MidKent College operates in accordance with Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) and the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Code of Practice. We handle, store, retain and dispose of DBS information securely and in accordance with applicable requirements. We will consider any information disclosed as part of a DBS check fairly and in accordance with the law.
Where a role involves regulated activity with children, it is an offence for an individual who is barred from such activity to seek to undertake that work. Candidates will therefore be required to provide the information and complete the declarations necessary to enable the College to assess their suitability to work with children.
Where applicable, candidates will be required to disclose relevant convictions, cautions and other information in accordance with the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and the applicable Exceptions Orders. This includes information that the law requires to be disclosed and, where relevant, information relating to conduct or sanctions concerning work with children outside the UK.
The College will assess disclosed information in accordance with its safeguarding responsibilities and will not unfairly discriminate against applicants on the basis of a conviction or other information disclosed.
Candidates are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the College’s safeguarding arrangements and relevant policies, including the [MKC Safeguarding Policy], [MKC Prevent Policy], [Safer Recruitment and Selection Policy] and [DBS Policy], which are available on the College’s Policy and Privacy Information page.
Applicants who are required to complete a DBS application or other mandatory pre-employment checks and decline to do so will not be able to proceed with their application.
