Emma Mernagh
Director of Safeguarding and Student Welfare.
What I do at MidKent College
As the designated safeguarding lead at MidKent College, I oversee several critical areas to ensure our students’ well-being and success. Here’s a breakdown of my responsibilities:
- Student Safeguarding & Welfare: As a team we work diligently to create a safe and supportive environment for all students. Whether it’s supporting young people with any safeguarding concerns, providing guidance, or coordinating with external agencies, we ensure the safety of students as a priority.
- Counselling & Mental Health: Our welfare and counselling services offer emotional support and mental health resources. With the ultimate goal of helping students to navigate challenges and promote their overall well-being.
- Student Enrichment, Engagement, and Sustainability: We actively engage with students to enhance their college experience. From organising events and activities outside the curriculum to developing a sense of community and belonging. Our Student Union is fully operational, we have an active Student Voice, and plans are underway to develop social action projects with our sustainability officer. Clubs and societies are available daily, all designed to further enrich the lives of students during their time at MidKent College.
- Learning Resources Centres: I oversee our learning resources centres, ensuring students have access to valuable materials and technology. These centres play a crucial role in the student academic journey.
- Personal, Social, Health & Economic Education (PSHE): Through our college group tutorial program, we have a differentiated scheme of learning to help our young people navigate the challenges of growing up in modern day Britain. These session cover essential life skills, health education, and financial literacy, empowering students for their future.

Who am I?
Background:
Since January 2012, I’ve dedicated my career to safeguarding roles in further education. Before taking on the role of designated safeguarding lead, I worked as a senior paediatric nurse in hospitals across London and Kent. My experience in healthcare provided valuable insights into the well-being of young people, which I now apply to my educational role.
My Drive:
My passion lies in developing systemic change to break down barriers that hinder young people’s achievement. Whether it’s addressing social, emotional, or academic challenges, I’m committed to ensuring every student has the support they need to thrive.
By fostering a safe and inclusive environment, the team support and empower students to reach their full potential.
Advice for prospective candidates
My main recommendation regarding applying for roles in the Student Support team is to thoroughly document how your qualification, experiences and qualities align with the job description, providing clear examples wherever possible.
Good luck!
