Key skills for a career in Student Support
Communication
You'll need to effectively communication to help you convey information clearly and articulately, whether it's providing guidance on academic matters, explaining support services available, or facilitating referrals to appropriate support services. You'll work well with others, and be confident dealing with students, teachers, managers and external agencies to develop personalised solutions and interventions that address each students' unique challenges and goals.
Empathy
Empathy is essential for identifying with and understanding students' concerns, struggles, and emotions. Your strong interpersonal skills will enable you to build rapport, establish trust, and create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable seeking assistance. You'll be an active listener.
Problem-solving
You'll assess students' needs, analyse challenges, and devise practical solutions and strategies to address academic, personal, or systemic barriers to success at College. Your resourcefulness will help you leverage support and assistance, and you'll have the ability to proactively implement preventative strategies to support students.

Emma Mernagh
Emma is our Director of Student Support, and our Designated Safeguarding Officer. She's driven to helping students success through protecting their health and wellbeing, and helping them to manage matters that might distract them from their studies.
Helen Hook
Helen is our Student Support Coordinator. She has a wealth of experience in coordinating support and engagement activities for students, a keen head for problem-solving under pressure, and superb links to external support agencies.
